Spotlight Marker is a browser extension that lets you highlight text on web pages and save those highlights.

What data the extension handles

When you save a highlight, the extension stores the following on your own computer, in your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local):

• the text you selected;
• a short amount of text immediately before and after your selection, for context;
• the page title, page URL, and website domain;
• a link back to the exact text on the page;
• the date and time you saved it.

Where the data goes

Nowhere. All of the above stays in your browser's local storage on your device.

• The extension has no server and makes no network requests.
• We do not collect, receive, see, sell, or share any of your data.
• There is no account, sign-in, analytics, advertising, or tracking.

The Spotlight companion site

If you open the Spotlight website (https://spotlight.pwnsbd.me), the extension will hand your saved highlights to that page — running in your browser — so you can read and organise them. This happens locally, between the extension and the page, on your device. Spotlight's own optional backup feature, if you choose to turn it on, is covered by the Spotlight website's privacy policy (the appendix below).

Removing your data

Use "Clear all" in the extension popup, or remove the extension, to delete every saved highlight.

Appendix — Spotlight website: optional cloud backup

This section covers the opt-in backup feature of the Spotlight website (spotlight.pwnsbd.me). It is entirely separate from the extension, which has no part in it. Backup is off unless you sign in; if you never sign in, nothing on the website leaves your browser.

• Sign-in: passwordless — a magic-link email, or optionally Google — handled by Supabase. Supabase stores your email address (and, if you use Google, the basic profile Google returns) to identify your account.
• What is backed up: the highlight fields listed earlier on this page (plus the marker colour), and an account identifier linking them to you. They are stored in a Supabase-hosted Postgres database and, by row-level security, are readable only by you.
• Deleting a highlight: deleting a highlight on the Spotlight website removes its backed-up copy from the database too — a delete is a real delete. The separate copy held by the extension on your own device is not affected.
• Restoring to a device: if you ask (a button in Settings, or the prompt Spotlight shows when it notices a gap), Spotlight will copy your backed-up highlights back into the Spotlight Marker extension on the device you are using — for example after a reinstall. This only ever happens on your explicit request.
• Preferences: your day/night theme choice, and your folders (their names, colours and which highlights you filed where), are stored on your Supabase account so they follow you between browsers.
• Public folders: folders are private by default. If you mark a folder Public in its edit screen, you are choosing to make the highlights filed under it visible to other people on the Spotlight "Commons" page (a shared feed, launching later). This is opt-in and reversible — set the folder back to Private and it is yours alone again. Nothing is public unless you make it so.
• No analytics, advertising, or tracking. Your private highlights are never sold or shared and are used only to show them back to you.

Deleting your account: open Settings (the gear icon in the bottom bar) and choose Delete account. This immediately removes your login, every backed-up highlight and all of your folders from the server, and cannot be undone. If anything goes wrong you can email justpawan7@gmail.com and it will be done by hand.
